Days 1:
Nairobi to Mount Kenya – Enter the Alpine Realm
Your ascent begins as we depart Nairobi for the fertile foothills of Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak. You arrive at a charming lodge nestled in the indigenous forest on the mountain’s slopes. After settling in, you embark on an acclimatization walk along nature trails bursting with birdlife and lush vegetation. The evening brings crisp mountain air and your first stunning view of Batian and Nelion peaks, their snowy caps glowing in the sunset, setting the tone for the days ahead.
Day 2:
Mount Kenya Foothills Trek And Sanctuary Visit
Today, you delve deeper into Mount Kenya’s unique ecosystem. After breakfast, transfer to the Mount Kenya National Park gate for a guided trek along one of the scenic lower-altitude trails, such as the Sirimon or Naro Moru routes. Hike through bamboo forests and giant heather zones, with your guide pointing out unique flora and potential wildlife sightings like buffalo or sykes monkeys. In the afternoon, descend to visit the nearby Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, a sanctuary for rare mountain bongo antelope and other species, blending conservation education with your alpine experience.
Day 3:
The Aberdare Ranges – Moorlands And Waterfalls
We journey southwest to the mystical Aberdare Mountains, a volcanic range known for its dense rainforests, hidden waterfalls and rare wildlife. You check into the famous Treetops Lodge or The Ark, unique hotels built on stilts overlooking active waterholes and salt licks. From the lodge’s viewing decks, you spend the afternoon and evening observing elephants, buffalo and elusive bongo antelope that emerge from the forest. The cool, misty atmosphere of the highlands creates an enchanting and serene setting.
Day 4:
Aberdares to Mount Longonot – The Volcanic Crater Challenge
After a morning spent watching wildlife from the lodge, drive into the Great Rift Valley. Your challenge awaits at Mount Longonot National Park, a dormant stratovolcano. Begin the hike up its steep slopes, rewarded with staggering 360-degree views of the Rift Valley floor and Lake Naivasha from the summit rim. The adventurous can complete the 7.2km circumnavigation of the forested crater itself. Later, relax at a lakeside lodge near Naivasha, soothing muscles in a pool with a view.
Day 5:
Chyulu Hills And Return to Nairobi – Volcanic Landscapes
Your final day explores one of Kenya’s youngest volcanic ranges, the rolling green Chyulu Hills. You enjoy a guided 4×4 drive or a moderate hike through these “Green Hills of Africa,” exploring ancient lava tubes and caves like Leviathan Cave. The landscape offers breathtaking vistas toward Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. Following this exploration, we begin the scenic return drive to Nairobi.
